Speaker: Kyle Southall, PhD, Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Science and Performance. While not novel, emotional intelligence is growing in both popularity and concept. One aspect of emotional intelligence that is growing in evidence are personality traits, commonly referred to as enneagram personality traits. Athletic trainers, while effective leaders in their respective settings, can benefit from these principles and their clinical application as the profession continues to grow and develop into novel areas of expertise in the 21st century, regardless of their respective positional power.
Panelists: Jordan Allen, MS, LAT, ATC, Lakeland Christian School; Matt Scherer, MS, AT, CSCS, USAW, Grand Valley State University; Kyle Johnston, MS, ATC, LAT, Miami Dolphins. This session brings together athletic trainers who are in different areas of athletic training (secondary education, collegiate level and the professional arena) to have a career discussion about their journeys to becoming athletic trainers and what their advice would be for up-and-coming ATs. Veteran AT and Alabama AT Assoc. Hall of Fame Inductee and Gatorade Team Sports Manager Jarod Grace will moderate the discussion.
Despite science showing purpose and need for carbohydrates and sugars in sports hydration drinks, many coaches and athletes opt for water when it comes to recovery. Eric Freese, Gatorade Sports Science Institute principal scientist, will share strategies on communicating the science behind carbs and sugar and their role in keeping athletes in peak physical condition.
Recovery is the most underutilized tool in the AT’s toolbox, and when it’s condensed to “rest,” it limits the understanding of what recovery really is. The science confirms that proper recovery is essential to athletic performance but what does proper recovery entail? In this session, Steven Basham of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute will provide insights on how to maximize recovery.
