“Fueling the Entire Athlete: Addressing Mental, Physical and Nutritional Barriers to Success.” A balanced diet can only go so far. Barriers to success like insufficient rest or poor mental health might not usually be in the purview of sports dietitians, but the overlap with athletic performance, and their nutrition, are huge. Learn how to be a holistic health advocate for your athletes in this speaker series as we discuss recovery, hydration, and finding balance.

  • Session 1: Athletes & Sleep, Amy Bender, Cerebra
    • Objectives:
      • Identify what good sleep is
      • Dispel common sleep myths
      • Apply sleep strategies for yourself and clients
  • Session 2: Hydration & Cognition, Kelly Barnes, PEP Life Sciences
    • Objectives:
      • Explain how much fluid athletes need during training and competition
      • Identify factors that influence exercise related fluid losses
      • Discuss cognition and the areas of sport performance that involve cognition
      • Identify when hydration has the highest risk of impairment for sport performance
  • Session 3: Athlete Supplement Use, Lisa Heaton, GSSI
    • Objectives:
      • Discuss the current regulation of dietary supplements by the FDA and potential risks to the athlete
      • Describe practices the Sports Dietitian can take to reduce the risk related to dietary supplement use
      • Identify scenarios where dietary supplementation may be beneficial to athlete health and/or performance
